The Rush of Independence!

Time! A funny concept; to understand it, even a genius like Stephen Hawking had to put in about 1,000 hours during his three years at Oxford! It is said that time is something which never stops and we humans have all the control of our actions as time rapidly passes by. The point is that in such a populated world, every individual of any race, shape or community has the same amount of time as one another and each one of us goes through the same phases of life, the only difference lies in cultures, experiences and actions, in terms of how one utilises that time.

The three major phases that come along the journey of life which is common for all individuals irrespective of their background or hardships are;

Childhood:- The shine of innocence with rays of joy! The most carefree time of life it's said.

Teenage/Adolescence:- Transitional stage of physical and psychological development. This is the phase when all the youngbloods are ready to prove their identity because they have to survive and grow in the world of social media wearing the social cover of irrelevant aggression, overthinking about every little thing which can be dealt with peace. In this phase, if one decodes the functioning of time and is ready to gamify the process of working hard, one can have an edge over all the competiton. The greed and the constant need to grow early and seek independence is all-in-all the phase of adolescence.

Adulthood:- The time of maturity, realisation and responsibility! The responsibility of sustaining in the real world, the realisations and regrets of small actions backed by maturity, the intersection of the biological clock with the financial clock and the responsibility of doing good for oneself and the community, to give back and equate all sorts of efforts taken by all the well-wishers.

Every existing individual in this world has the same 24 hours, still, the difference between the topper of your class, or the person who can dunk on the basketball court lies in the way one manages their time. If you want to look good in front of thousands, then you have to outwork thousands in front of nobody! And the whole concept of outworking in itself is the result of execution after managing time correctly.

I conducted a very small survey among my friend circle and a few more people around me of the same age group of sophomore/first-year students in my college, and I could do that only because finally, after 2 long years of online, the colleges called us for offline classes. Finally, I could experience the new feeling of buying new and fresh clothes, new books and resources and finally could experience the traditional and the most liked way of being taught/learning; by sitting in a class, fighting to be able to sit in the first few rows and live the glorified college-life! Finally, after experiencing online interactions, the time came to interact face-to-face with new people, make new and fresh connections, learn about different cultures, interact with course instructors and talk about innovative ideas with teachers and grow!

Coming back to the survey that I subtly took, I asked my friends about their opinion on independence and how they are liking no parent restrictions(even though the college has really strict rules). The only thing that I could conclude from their opinion on independence was, that when we are young, exemplifying; in school life, we think about how fast can we get into high school to avoid restrictions and become independent, in high school, we think of how fast can we finish it and get into college life and while in college life, we think of how fast can we start earning money so that we don't have to rely on anyone for money to gain financial independence, however, only the people in the respective phases can tell about how it's all just a hype when thought of it, with an open mind. Obviously, all phases should be enjoyed, however the rush for independence isn't right, as once you actually get that, you start missing the dependence. I wasn't missing my mother's taunts for staying up till late until I finally saw huge dark circles around my eyes in the hostel where I went to seek independence. I realised seeking early independence isn't correct until I couldn't manage my time without my father's guidance. Staying in a hostel, far away from home isn't wrong but the rush of independence is!

  2. Beautifully written. You've presented an accurate depiction of the phases of life and the naive expectations that we harbour about adulthood. True maturity lies in recognising and enjoying the present because those times will never return again
